CAROLINE GRAY, Dancing with Light, photography, 60” x 53.5”

Lois Lambert Gallery presents Undercurrents, the most recent exhibition of work by photographer Caroline Gray.

Gray first began photographing her surroundings at the age of 10, when she received her first camera. On visits to her father’s tea plantation in India, she would take photographs from the airplane as they flew over the Himalayan mountains. Ever since then, Gray has continued to hone her photography skills as she’s traveled from her home in the UK to India, Greece, Portugal, France, Germany, and finally California.

Gray came to California over 25 years ago and fell in love with the landscape and its coastline. Moving from England, where it is cloudy and rainy, the West Coast sunlight and clear skies inspired her. Gray became fascinated with how light interacts with landscapes, particularly along the beach. This light became Gray’s muse and the water her venue.

This exhibition, Undercurrents is named not only for the current of water moving in two directions below the surface, but also in reference to the underlying emotions in each image. Framing her underwater dancers with color, light, and movement, Gray creates mood and ephemeral beauty. “I am transfixed by the sensuousness of the human body in water.” Gray uses her special affinity with light and water to show the beauty of humanity alongside the vastness of the natural world.

Gray approaches photography like painting, not only in formal aspects like composition and color, but in the intimate sense of creating a dialogue with the subject. She works primarily with a Nikon 810 camera and a variety of lenses, opting for as little digital enhancement as possible. Her focus is on maintaining a close connection with the subject, rather than exploring an artificial digital realm. For Gray, her photographs are always about the light and capturing the spontaneous grace of her subject.

Caroline Gray was born in Malaysia and raised in Canterbury, UK before relocating to California. She studied photography at the Hammersmith Academy in London, UK and at UCLA with George Simian. Her work has been shown across California and the UK. This is Gray’s first exhibition at Lois Lambert Gallery.
